Wat kleur in grijze dagen

 



De zon hebben we al lang niet gezien: grijs, grijs, grijs is de kleur van de laatste weken.

We haven't seen the sun for a long time. Grey, grey grey that is the only colour we've seen these last weeks.

 





Tijd voor wat kleur dus! 

Time for some colour!










Het is de eerste keer dat ik sokken met een hiel in ribbelsteek brei. De hiel wordt hierdoor wat dikker en naar verluidt ook slijtvaster. Nog nieuw voor mij is dat deze hiel met verkorte rijen toch een - korte - hielflap heeft. De hiel met verkorte rijen valt vaak wat minder in de smaak omdat deze minder ruimte op de wreef heeft. Door er toch een hielflap en spie aan toe te voegen is dit probleem van de baan.




 








It's a first heel in garter stitch for me. It makes the heel somewhat cushier and should make it also more hard-wearing. Another new thing for me is the short row heel combined with a heel flap. Some people don't like short row heels, as they can feel tight on the instep. Adding a heel flap and gusset solve this problem.





Wat er ook van zij, deze dikkere sokken in vrolijke kleuren fleuren de grijze winter op!

In any case, these warm socks in cheerful colours brighten up grey winter days!

Mosaic Socks

Eindelijk kom ik bij de meer uitdagende patronen in 'The Ultimate Book of Socks'. Dit paar sokken heeft een boord in mozaieksteek. De foto in het boek is erg onduidelijk, de kleuren in de boord liggen zo dicht bij elkaar dat het patroon nauwelijks - eigenlijk: niet - zichtbaar is. Op Ravelry is deze sok maar 9 keer te zien, waarvan bij slechts één project het mozaïekpatroon duidelijk zichtbaar is.

Finally I've reached the more challenging patterns in 'The Ultimate Book of Socks'. This pair has a fold-down cuff in mosaic stitch. The picture in the book is rather unclear. The mosaic pattern is barely, or better: not, visible because the colours are to close. On Ravelry only 9 knitters made this pattern, with only one of them the pattern is clearly visible.

 

Ik waagde het er maar op. Het patroon is door de kleuren redelijk goed zichtbaar geworden, maar meer tegenstelling was nog beter geweest.

I was willing to give this pattern a try , and yes, the mosaic pattern is reasonable visible, altough even more contrasting colours would have been better.

 

Na de mozaiekboord begin je in de andere richting te breien, zodat naderhand de goede kant van de boord over de sok geplooid kan worden. Pas dan wordt er een stuk boordsteek gebreid zodat de sok goed om het been zit.

After knitting the mosaic cuff, I had to change my knitting direction. So the cuff can be fold down over the sock in the right way. Only then a ribbed border is knitted, to keep the sock snug to the leg.

 

Van de sterteen ben ik geen voorstander, maar ik hield me redelijk netjes aan het patroon. Enkel op het laatst heb ik de overgebleven steken niet samengetrokken, maar ze netjes dichtgemaasd. Wie wil er immer zo een 'stekenknoet' aan de tenen? 

I really don't like a star toe but followed obediently the pattern as described. Well, not till the last instruction, instead of pulling the remaining stitches together, I used a neat kitchener stich. After all, who wants a knot of stitches on the toes?
