'Shellies'

A while ago I bought an issue of 'Handwerken Zonder Grenzen'.
This issue contained an article by Monique Boonstra about Shetland and the pattern of her 'Shellies'. I fell for them immediatly and hereby I could finally made the-since-much-too-long-waiting-because-still-to-knit-birthday-present (I know, still one behind, I won't forget!).

I've knitted the Shellies with Arwetta sock yarn by Filcolana in blended grey. I really couldn't choose another colour than Monique did, this is the perfect colour for this pattern.

There is a little surprise in this pattern, which I didn't noticed in the pictures. In the thumb gusset sits a little lace pattern! And even more to my surprise, they were different on each gusset? Is that a mistake in the pattern or just an extra creative touch? i've knitted them according the pattern, so with to different gussets. I like the one on the right hand the most.

So high time to arrange a coffee date to hand over the Shellies, Lin.

Big thank you for my willing models: one with polished nails, adding extra colour and swung, and one with a firmer hand to make the lace pattern more visible.

Starting Point

Finally a blog about a finished project. I got sidetracked from my schedule and in addition to it we've got hot weather, we even had a real heat wave. No fun for a knitter, knitting went at a snail's pace. Gladly temperatures are back to normal, and I'm on track again.

The 'small' sidetrack I made was thanks to Joji Locatelli. I didn't know her untill I saw on Facebook that she was hosting a Mystery Knit-a-Long (MKAL), so I went looking for her designs. She makes lovely things, but no, I wasn't going to participate in this Starting Point MKAL. That was untill other knitters started talking about this MKAL. Some off them were also in doubt because of other ongoing projects, but soon everybody was talking about the right yarns and choosing colours. In our Stitch 'n Bitch group eight stitchers took part in this MKAL!

So I gave in, on condition that I only could use yarn out of my stash. That stash is big, not to say huge, hence the chronical lack of space. I realised that again whilst rummaging through it, it made me shamefaced. Eventhough, I couldn't manage to find a suitable five colour combination. So I had to compromise: the Katia Olé New Duetto, was a suitable variegated yarn and I had a solid blue in stash to go with it. So I needed to buy three other solids. I allowed myself to buy for that 'Jawollekes' (Jawoolly's?), as I call the Jawoll sock yarn fondly.

So I bought purple, ochre and green to complete the palette. Instead of the green I would had rather a rust brown, as there is no real green appearing in the Katia. But that wasn't available in the right shade.
During the knitting I got worried, the green next to the ochre, wasn't that odd? But further on, I saw how the colours were working perfectly together. So besides an unexpected project, this was also a lesson in combining colours. And if the rust brown would have been available, I would have ended with a dark and sombre shawl.

After choosing colours it was time to knit. We knew that we would end with a rectangular shawl, so starting with two triangles was rather odd. After clue 2, I realised how this would work out and I loved the - new for me - construction. Although I heard some grumbling on the net about the fact that this wasn't an original construction. And indeed, I saw similar examples by other designers. But in my opinion, to find a complete new construction seems almost impossible. And in the end it is the use of colour and the choice of stitches that makes a pattern personal to a skilled designer.

The knitting went wel, although at first I tried to keep up with other projects as well, so I skipped the tip to weave in ends on the go. And then it became hot, real hot, to hot to knit comfortably. So the other projects were moved aside. But after the hot weather and the twisted rib in clue 3, things went smoothly again. Although some procrastination occured at weaving in the many ends.

So, with a delay of two weeks my Starting Point MKAL has reached its endingpoint. Knitted on 3 mm needles it measures 180 cm in lenght and 46 cm in width, a good size to wear for me.
