In 'The Ultimate Sock Book' van Vogue Knitting worden deze sokken 'Renaissance Socks' genoemd, in een andere uitgave 'Vogue knitting on the go: Socks two', worden ze 'Medieval Knee Socks' genoemd.

Het patroon is gebaseerd op een archeologische vondst van 2004. Toen werden in de graftombe van Eleonora de Toledo (1522 - 1562) oa. gebreide sokken gevonden. Ze werden gebreid met zijde en bevatten verschillende steken. Gebreide sokken kwamen in deze periode in opmars, ze zaten immers veel comfortabeler dan sokken gemaakt uit textiel.
The pattern is based on stockings found in the tomb of Elenor of Toledo ( 1522 - 1562 ). The stockings were knitted in silk and contained different stitches. Knitted stockings became popular during this period, they were much more comfortable than earlier stockings made of textile.
